Job Description:

The VA Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana is a new opened 200-bed tertiary care facility affiliated with the LSU and Tulane Schools of Medicine. We are seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Neurologist for full-time employment the Chief of Neurology Service. Candidates must have expertise in evaluating and managing patients with the broad spectrum of neurological diseases. The candidate must qualify for an academic appointment with the Neurology Departments of both medical school affiliates at the level of Associate or Full Professor. The New Orleans VA Medical Center is actively involved in the instruction of medical students and residents and a site of clinical and basic science research. The preferred candidate will have a history of involvement in resident supervision, teaching and curriculum development as well as demonstrated excellence in clinical care and administration.

As a Physician (Neurology - Chief), our duties may include the following:


  • Building new programs and affiliations.
  • Expanding neurology service for the new facility, patient care and supervising students, residents, fellows and allied health professionals.
  • Board certified or board eligible in neurology.
  • Comfortable with inpatient neurology as well as ambulatory neurology, including general neurology and the subspecialties of neurology.
  • Show evidence of competent leadership effectiveness and professionalism.
  • Coordinate the clinical rotations and oversee the education and training of rotating medical students, neurology residents and Fellows.
  • Ensure that rotating residents receive strong clinical training in all aspects of neurology.
  • Report ot the Chief of Staff and is a member of the Medical Executive Committee.
  • Oversee the Neurology Service quality improvement program.
  • Review clinical privileges for neurology staff, and pay for performance assessment.
  • Take responsibility for recommending actions necessary to ensure staff compliance with Medical Staff By-Laws, and relevant facility policies and regulations.
  • Participate in budgetary planning for neurology service.


    Work Schedule: Monday-Friday & Weekends, Hours (Varies)

    This is a NON-BARGAINING Unit position.Basic Requirements:


    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.


      Preferred Experience:


      • Fellowship training within neurology is preferred.


        Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

        Physical Requirements: Position requires a physical examination. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
